Frequently Asked Questions

How does this calculator determine required monthly savings?

The calculator utilizes the future value formula of an annuity. It first computes how much your initial current savings will grow through compound interest over your specified duration. It then solves for the exact recurring monthly contribution (PMT) needed to bridge the gap to your target goal.

What is the difference between beginning and end-of-month contributions?

Beginning-of-month contributions (Annuity Due) earn interest immediately throughout that month, compounding faster and slightly reducing your required monthly savings. End-of-month contributions (Ordinary Annuity) represent standard payroll deposits where contributions earn interest starting the subsequent period.

How does inflation affect my savings target?

Inflation diminishes future purchasing power. For example, $50,000 saved over 5 years with 3% annual inflation is equivalent to approximately $43,128 in today’s purchasing power. Our calculator uses the Fisher equation to display both your nominal accumulated balance and your real, inflation-adjusted purchasing power.

What happens if my current savings already exceed my goal?

If your current savings meet or exceed your target, the required contribution is $0.00 and time required is 0 months. However, under negative returns or high inflation, your purchasing power will decay over time unless maintained with periodic replenishment.

Are the projected savings growth numbers guaranteed?

Projections are guaranteed only when held in fixed-rate, FDIC- or NCUA-insured vehicles such as High-Yield Savings Accounts (HYSA) or Certificates of Deposit (CD) within statutory insurance limits. Equities, ETFs, and market-linked assets fluctuate, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
